For the Mars Closest Approach on August 27, 2003, our customer wanted to show what the Earth looked like 60,000 years ago when the Neanderthals were perhaps the first people to see Mars enlarged in the night sky.  I was tasked to research what the flora and fauna were during the Neanderthal era, as well a depict accurately, what the Neanderthal looked like, tools they used, and clothing they wore.  The image was initially collaged together, then hand drawn in Photoshop, because the customer wanted a hand drawn look to the image.
